The various uses of pallets in industrial logistics

When talking about pallets, or “bancali” in Italian, reference is made to an essential loading support for the transportation, handling, and storage of goods in several industrial sectors. The pallet is a horizontal wooden platform with a minimal height compatible with movement by pallet jacks, forklift trucks, and other suitable handling equipment.

Pallets are divided into standard (or regulated) pallets and custom-sized pallets (or non-standard). From a management perspective, based on the type of pallet, we can have:

• Returnable pallet (or “exchange” pallet): This refers to a pallet that can be used for numerous handling cycles. For this reason, its characteristics must fit a defined construction model, at least in Europe (but not limited to), known as “Eur-Epal,” which ensures high durability. Generally, it is employed in cases of consistent supply between companies, and due to its structural features, it can be exchanged on a one-to-one basis with identical pallets.
• One-way pallet: This refers to a pallet designed for single-use and does not adhere to any specific standard. In many cases, it is a less durable and cost-effective pallet. Usually, it reaches the end-user and is discarded after a single use; being a non-standard pallet, it cannot be exchanged with other pallets.
